The Connection between Spheroidal Galaxies and QSOs

چکیده
In view of the extensive evidence of tight inter-relationships between spheroidal galaxies (and galactic bulges) with massive black holes hosted at their centers, a consistent model must deal jointly with the evolution of the two components. We describe one such model, which successfully accounts for the local luminosity function of spheroidal galaxies, for their photometric and chemical properties, for deep galaxy counts in different wavebands, including those in the (sub)-mm region which proved to be critical for current semi-analytic models stemming from the standard hierarchical clustering picture, for clustering properties of SCUBA galaxies, of EROs, and of LBGs, as well as for the local mass function of massive black holes and for quasar evolution. Predictions that can be tested by surveys carried out by SIRTF are presented. Abbreviations: KAP – Kluwer Academic Publishers; compuscript – Electronically submitted article JEL codes: D24, L60, 047

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies
We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...

متن کاملImaging of Z∼2 Qso Host Galaxies with the Hubble Space Telescope
We report on deep imaging in 2 filters with the PC2 camera of HST, of five QSOs at redshift ∼2, with a range of optical and radio luminosity. The observations included a suite of PSF observations which were used to construct new PSF models, described elsewhere by Dumont et al (2001). The new PSF models were used to remove the QSO nucleus from the images. We find that the host galaxies have reso...
متن کاملMolecular Gas in Infrared-excess, Optically-selected Qsos and the Connection with Infrared Luminous Galaxies
The initial results of a millimeter (CO) survey of infrared-excess, optically-selected quasars from the Palomar-Green (PG) Bright Quasar Survey (BQS) with redshifts in the range 0.04 < z < 0.17 are presented. These observations represent the first step towards establishing with a complete sample whether or not quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) reside in molecular gas-rich galaxies, as well as toward...
